A Primer in General Biofeedback

Instructors

Amaro Laria, Ph.D. & Katharine Larsson, PhD, PMH CNS-BC, RN

This workshop will introduce participants to the theory and practice of general biofeedback. We will review some of the historical antecedents and theoretical foundations in the development of the field of biofeedback, and introduce participants to the basic principles and techniques in its’ clinical application. We will demonstrate how to use biofeedback technology to make recordings of various psychophysiological measures including: muscle tension (EMG), skin conductance, surface temperature, breathing, and blood volume pulse (BVP) / heart rate variability (HRV). This introductory workshop will serve as an excellent introduction to those considering pursuing further specialized training in biofeedback, as well as those simply interested in becoming more familiarized with this science and technology. We will not cover neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback.

She underwent psychotherapy training at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA; formerly known as The Cambridge Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School) in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Larsson also completed a two-year post graduate fellowship at the Behavioral Medicine Program at The Cambridge Hospital, which emphasized the clinical applications of biofeedback and hypnosis, as well as integrative psychotherapy in the treatment of a variety of mental health conditions (i.e., anxiety, depression, trauma-based responses), as well as medical conditions exacerbated by psychological stress (e.g., migraines, IBS, TMJ, other chronic pain conditions). Dr. Larsson was director of the Biofeedback Program at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (currently Atrius Health). She was also a clinical supervisor in the Behavioral Medicine Program at CHA, until she co-founded Boston Behavioral Medicine, LLC in Brookline, MA, where she continues to practice behavioral medicine, integrative psychotherapy and psychopharmacology.

  • Participants will gain knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical biofeedback.

  • Participants will learn about the historical antecedents and theoretical foundations in the science of clinical biofeedback.

  • Participants will learn how to make physiological recordings of: muscle tension (EMG), skin conductance, surface temperature, breathing, and blood volume pulse (BVP) / heart rate variability (HRV) using biofeedback technology.

  • Participants will gain competence in identifying mental health problems (i.e., stress, anxiety, phobias, trauma-based reactions), as well as various medical conditions (i.e., migraines, TMJ, IBS, etc.) that can be treated adjunctively with biofeedback.

  • Participants will obtain a solid knowledge base that will serve as an excellent foundation for further specialized training in clinical biofeedback.
